Wirbel's work has been described as a Wonderland: strange characters, hybrid creatures, birds, animals, and half-human figures that pull from childhood memory and mature fantasy simultaneously. One writer compared her to Lewis Carroll: the fabulous world she constructs is "not the centre of the earth, but the centre of herself, where mature fantasies and inhibitions are rooted with the memories and dreams of childhood." Her output spans from intricate watercolors and gouaches to large-format acrylics, all sharing a wild, instinctive energy. She wrote: "Living in the wild — not in the fierce and primary sense, but natural and primitive: that of instinct. Feel the beating of the heart of the earth." Her career lasted barely a decade, which makes surviving works genuinely rare. She died at age 40.
