Nicknamed "Big Brush" for his loose, impressionistic style
Liang Richardson is a third-generation British artist and lifelong painter, celebrated for large-scale oil on canvas works of exceptional vibrancy and light. His signature loose impressionistic style — earning him the nickname "Big Brush" — spans bird studies, landscapes, and abstract architectural compositions. His work is held in hundreds of private collections across Europe and the United States.
Liang's paintings are distinguished by a rare duality: viewed up close, they read as near-abstract compositions, yet at a distance they reveal an extraordinary richness of detail.
Liang Richardson is a third-generation British artist whose work is exhibited widely across Europe and the United States. Born into a distinguished artistic lineage — both his father and grandfather were accomplished artists and sculptors — Richardson's immersion in the creative world began almost at birth.
He showed a natural affinity for art from an exceptionally early age, receiving formal instruction from his father and beginning to paint in watercolour at the age of three. His education was shaped entirely around a future in art, culminating in his studies at Southampton College of Art. It was there that the cultural upheaval of the 1970s proved a pivotal influence, drawing him into a circle of avant-garde artists exhibiting in East London galleries. This encounter transformed his practice, marking a decisive shift from traditional watercolour to abstract oil on canvas.
Liang's paintings are distinguished by a rare duality: viewed up close, they read as near-abstract compositions, yet at a distance they reveal an extraordinary richness of detail. Working exclusively in oil on canvas, he is particularly celebrated for large-scale works that radiate an exceptional vibrancy of light and colour. His father famously noted that his son never hesitated to use a large brush for fine detail — earning him the affectionate nickname "Big Brush," an apt description of the loose, impressionistic style that continues to define his work.
An avid ornithologist, Liang's impressionist studies of birds are prized by private collectors and professional societies alike. In recent years, his practice has expanded to include bold abstract architectural compositions in vivid colour, reflecting an ever-evolving artistic vision.
Liang Richardson's work is held in hundreds of private collections and has been exhibited in galleries from New York to California. He currently resides in the South of France with his wife, where he continues to paint and mentor an emerging artist.
